Qui sommes-nous ?

Il y a ceux qui connaissent l'EPA depuis les balbutiements du programme PREMA en 1985, jusqu'aux accomplissements récents telle l'élection, presque banale, en septembre dernier à Rio au Brésil, d'un africain au bureau du Comité de Conservation du Conseil International des Musées ; telle encore la conduite de l'étude sur la réhabilitation du centre historique de la ville de Porto-Novo. A vrai dire ceux-là peuvent se compter sur les doigts d'une seule main.

Il y a la grande majorité, enthousiaste, de ceux qui nous considèrent comme un acteur majeur du patrimoine africain ; ils trouvent naturel que nous existions et faisions les choses que nous faisons. Pour ces derniers et pour tous ceux qui savent entrevoir la réalité derrière les chiffres, lire le contexte, je voudrais juste préciser que l'Ecole du Patrimoine Africain - EPA est née officiellement le 11 novembre 1998, d'un accord entre l'ICCROM (Centre International d'Etudes sur la Conservation et la Restauration des Biens Culturels) et l'Université Nationale du Bénin. Physiquement, elle occupe trois sites dans la ville de Porto-Novo, à savoir un siège de 600 m2 de locaux et 1000 m2 de jardin abritant nos bureaux et nos salles de formation ; une résidence universitaire avec 18 chambres individuelles sur le Campus de l'Université Nationale du Bénin ; une villa de quatre appartements de 6 pièces chacun où sont accueillis les enseignants, formateurs et chercheurs en mission.
L'EPA, c'est aussi et surtout une équipe permanente de 24 personnes dont une coordination technique de 10 membres ; cet établissement qui reçoit chaque année une centaine de professionnels africains doit autofinancer son fonctionnement !

Who are we?

There are those who have known EPA from the beginnings of the PREMA Programme in 1985 to the recent accomplishments such as the election of an African member to the Directory board of the Conservation Committee of the International Council of Museums, last September in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; or such as the rehabilitation study of the historic centre of the town of Porto-Novo. To tell the truth, these people can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

There is the great enthusiastic majority of those who consider us a major actor in the field of African heritage. They think it natural that we exist and that we do the things we do. For these, and for all those who know how to perceive reality behind figures, who can read the context, I would like to say that the Ecole du Patrimoine Africain - EPA (School of African Heritage), was created on November 11, 1998, after an agreement between ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) and the National University of Benin. Physically, the school is spread over three sites in Porto-Novo: the headquarters with its administrative buildings and classrooms, together covering 600m2, situated in 1,000m2 of gardens, a university residence with 18 single rooms on the campus of the National University of Benin, and four six room flats for accommodating teaching staff and visiting researchers.
EPA is also a permanent team of 24 people, 10 of which are part of the technical coordination team. This institution which welcomes each year approximately 100 African professionals must be self financed!

Le Colloque Aguda : un an après

Il y a un an l'EPA et l'IBERDA avec le soutien de la Fondation Ford, de l'UNESCO, du Nigerian Hinterland Project de l'Université Nationale du Bénin, de la Ville de Porto-Novo, etc. organisaient la conférence "Aguda, aspects du patrimoine afro-brésilien" du 26 au 30 novembre 2001. Des liens tissés et des idées issues de cette conférence se concrétisent progressivement :

  • Phillip M. Jones, étudiant en Licence en Histoire de l'art à Emory University, Atlanta, animateur de programmes éducatifs, est venu en stage à l'EPA et au Jardin des plantes et de la nature (JPN) pour 6 semaines. Ce programme a été coordonné par le professeur Edna Bay, historienne des religions africaines.
  • M. Joseph Adande, enseignant associé à l'EPA, s'est rendu à l'Université d'Emory du 14 au 21 septembre 2002, pour discuter des modalités de partenariat entre l'Université d'Emory et l'Université d'Abomey-Calavi d'une part, et l'Université d'Emory et l'EPA d'autre part. A la suite de cette rencontre il a été décidé la signature d'une convention de partenariat entre l'EPA et Emory University, afin de faciliter l'échange d'étudiants stagiaires et les levées de fonds en faveur de l'EPA aux USA.
  • Des échanges à Rio de Janeiro entre d'une part, M. Godonou le Directeur de l'EPA, et d'autre part, SE A. da Costa e Silva, Président de l'Académie brésilienne des Lettres, les professeurs Beluce Bellucci Directeur des études afro-asiatiques et Milton Guran de l'Université Candido Mendès de Rio, ont abouti à la volonté de mettre en place dès 2003 un programme de bourses de stage professionnel pour les étudiants et chercheurs de l'EPA auprès de certaines institutions brésiliennes et réciproquement.

    Par un heureux hasard de l'histoire, Gres Unidos Da Tijuca, l'une des plus grandes écoles de samba du Brésil, a choisi comme thème de défilé pour le Carnaval de Rio de mars 2003 "les Agudas du Bénin" !


    The Aguda colloquium: one year later

    One year ago EPA and IBERDA organised in Porto-Novo a conference entitled "Aguda: Aspects of Afro-Brazilian Heritage in the Bight of Benin", from November 26 to 30, 2001, with the support of UNESCO, the Ford Foundation, the Nigerian Hinterland Project, the Porto-Novo town council, etc. The ties created and ideas exchanged during the conference are progressively giving results:

  • Phillip M. Jones, student in History of Art at Emory University, Atlanta, USA, followed a 6 week internship at EPA and at the Garden of Plants and Nature of Porto-Novo (JPN). This programme was coordinated by Professor Edna Bay, historian specialised in African religions.
  • Mr Joseph Adande, one of EPA's associate facilitators went to Emory University from September 14 to 21, to study the modalities of cooperation between Emory University and EPA on the one hand, and between Emory University and the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin on the other. At the conclusion of this meeting, it was decided that a cooperation agreement should be signed between EPA and Emory University, in order to facilitate student internships between the two institutions and fund raising for EPA in the USA.
  • A meeting in Rio de Janeiro between Mr Godonou, EPA's Director and HE A. da Costa e Silva, President of the Brazilian Literature Academy, and Beluce Bellucci, director of Afro-Asian studies and Milton Guran from Candido Mendes University in Rio, led to the wish to set up in 2003 a grant programme for professional internships for EPA's students and researchers in a number of Brazilian institutions and vice versa.

    By pure chance, Gres Unidos Da Tijuca, one of Brazil's most famous samba schools, has chosen for the 2003 Rio carnival the theme "The Aguda of Benin"!

    Audit 2001

    Le rapport de l'audit de gestion 2001 de l'EPA lancé en juillet dernier vient de sortir. Il a été réalisé par le cabinet EMSC de M. Pascal Fatigba, expert comptable agréé près la Cour d'Appel de Cotonou.
    C'est le premier rapport d'audit après la mise en place de nouvelles normes de procédures de gestion administrative et financière.

    Ce rapport est destiné aux membres du conseil d'administration de l'EPA et est disponible sur demande motivée.


    2001 audit

    EPA's 2001 financial audit report has just come out. It was carried out by the EMSC office of Mr Pascal Fatigba, chartered accountant, registered expert at the Court of Appeal of Cotonou.
    It is the first audit report after the setting up of new financial and administrative management procedures at EPA.

    It has been prepared for the members of EPA's Board of directors and may be consulted on request.

    Formation au PMDA

    Le PMDA (Programme pour le développement des musées en Afrique), créé en 2000 sur le modèle de l'EPA, est son institution soeur. Basé à Mombasa, Kenya, il oeuvre pour la préservation, la gestion et la promotion du patrimoine culturel africain à travers des formations et des prestations de services aux professionnels et aux institutions travaillant dans le domaine du patrimoine mobilier et immobilier des pays anglophones de l'Afrique subsaharienne.

    Du 30 septembre 2002 au 20 juin 2003, le PMDA organise à Mombasa une formation diplômante sur la Gestion des collections de musées et des sites, qui regroupe 12 participants de 6 pays : Ethiopie, Gambie, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzanie, Zimbabwe, et ce avec le soutien de : NORAD, Ministère des Affaires étrangères de l'Italie, Fondation Ford, SDC Suisse.

    Training at the PMDA

    The PMDA (Programme for Museum Development in Africa) is EPA's sister institution, created in 2000. Located in Mombasa, Kenya, it is dedicated to the preservation, management and promotion of cultural heritage in Africa through a programme of training and development support services to professionals and institutions responsible for movable and immovable heritage in English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa.

    From September 30,2002 to June 20, 2003, PMDA is organising a Postgraduate course on the Care and Management of Heritage and Museum Collections, which brings together 12 participants from 6 countries: Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, with the support of NORAD, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ford Foundation, SDC Switzerland.

    Africa 2009 à l'EPA

    Du 02 septembre au 22 novembre 2002, l'EPA abrite le 4è Cours régional Africa 2009 sur la conservation et la gestion du patrimoine culturel immobilier. Cette formation réunit 19 professionnels du patrimoine (architectes, urbanistes, conservateurs...) de 17 pays de l'Afrique francophone et hispanophone : Bénin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroun, Centrafrique, République Démocratique du Congo, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinée, Guinée Equatoriale, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Sénégal, Tchad, Togo. Ce 4ème cours régional a été financé par : Fonds du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, Sida, NORAD, Ministères des Affaires étrangères de l'Italie et de la Finlande, Swedish National Heritage Board, ICCROM.

    C'est une formation intensive comportant des visites d'étude sur les sites majeurs du Bénin et un travail approfondi sur le Jardin des plantes et de la nature (JPN) et le palais royal d'Akron. Visitez leur site Web : http://www.africa2009.net/.


    Africa 2009 at EPA

    From September 02 to November 22, 2002, EPA is hosting the 4th Africa 2009 Regional Course on the Conservation and Management of Immovable Cultural Heritage. The course brings together 19 heritage professionals (architects, curators, urban planners...) from 17 French-speaking and Spanish-speaking African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Chad, Togo. It is financed by: UNESCO World heritage fund, Sida, NORAD, Italian and Finnish Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Swedish National Heritage Board, ICCROM.

    It is an intensive course with study tours to major Beninese sites and an in-depth work on the Garden of Plants and Nature (JPN) and the Akron Royal Palace in Porto-Novo.
